How to Tell Time

Before starting this animation, take a moment to review the values:

The top row displays the hour.

The bottom row displays the minutes after the hour.

The "ON" color is the color of the AM sphere in the morning.

Simply  combine all the values of the "ON" spheres of each row to calculate the time.

It is easier to memorize the combined values of the highest value spheres (32+16=48, 32+16+8=56 and then add the lower valued spheres.

Click Arrow to start.   Press the space bar to pause and continue.   Hover  over the bottom black bar and click on the icon on the extreme right side to see a full screen.   Press the ESC key to exit full screen.

The Kinetic Clock II © uses the Binary Number system, the same system computers use.

The HOUR is displayed in the TOP RIGHT 4 positions in binary.   The MINUTES are on the bottom row in binary.   The top Left most position is a pendulum that changes every 10 seconds.  To its right is an AM indicator which changes every 12 hours.    The VALUE of each position doubles from right to left:

                  Pendulum        AM                  8                 4               2             1     < Hours                         _______________________________________________________________________________

                          32                  16                  8                 4               2             1     < Minutes

If a position has the “ON” color, Its VALUE is added to the VALUE of the other positions that are “ON” in that row.    The “ON” color will be the color of the AM indicator in the morning.  After 12:00 noon, it changes to the “OFF” color.  That’s how you know which color is the “ON” color.
